Abstract

Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants have largely replaced warfarin as the recommended anticoagulant for common thromboembolic conditions like stroke prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism. However, its use after cardiac surgery is not well studied as large randomized trials excluded these patients. Despite this, NOAC use has been increasing in the United States, but the prevalence of use in Canadian cardiac surgical centres is unknown. We conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize the use of NOACs compare to warfarin early after cardiac surgery at a quaternary referral centre to determine the rate and factors associated with NOAC use.
