Abstract
Fraser Health (FH) vascular surgery guidelines recommend that post-operative surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) durations should be less than 24 hours post-operation. Current evidence suggests longer durations of antibiotics do not reduce the risk of surgical site infections and increase the risk of adverse events. The antibiotic of choice is cefazolin. Anecdotal evidence suggests high rates of prolonged post-operative SAP and suboptimal antibiotic selection on the Vascular Surgery Ward at Royal Columbian Hospital; however, the true concordance rate with FH guidelines is unknown. This study aims to describe post-operative SAP duration and agent selection concordance with FH guidelines.
