Abstract
British Columbia has been in an opioid overdose public health crisis since 2016 and prescription opioids remain a major contributor. Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) are often prescribed opioids as a component of their analgesia and sedation packages. There is concern this may lead to iatrogenic opioid dependence and harm. A retrospective exploratory chart review of opioid-naïve medical ICU patients receiving IMV admitted to the Royal Jubilee Hospital was undertaken to identify the number of patients prescribed an opioid on at discharge and to characterize the analgesia and sedation practices in the unit.
