Abstract
The management of hemorrhagic shock involves infusion of blood products with massive transfusion protocol (MTP). Patients with critical bleeding often present as hypocalcemic. Hypocalcemia has been associated with increased mortality in trauma and critically ill patients. Low calcium levels in trauma patients corresponds to administered blood product volume. Although the MTP includes regular replacement with IV calcium, it is unclear the level of adherence to this part of the protocol. The purpose of this study is to investigate current calcium monitoring/ supplementation practices at Royal Columbian Hospital in patients who receive massive transfusions to help inform improvements in future practice.
