preceptor oversight of residents

Both UnLicensed and fully licenced licensed residents

Preceptors are responsible for supervision of residents on rotation with them. The level of responsibilities and the degree of supervision assigned to residents during each rotation shall be consistent with the skill levels of the resident.

Oversight of Fully Licensed Pharmacy Residents

Preceptors are responsible for supervision of residents on rotation with them. The level of responsibilities and the degree of supervision assigned to residents during each rotation shall be consistent with the skill levels of the resident.

Preceptors should clearly communicate to the resident the preceptor's expectations regarding resident oversight. For example should the resident have the preceptor review the resident's recommendations and care plan prior to communicating with the care team?

Oversight of Unlicensed Pharmacy Residents

Generally, new graduates become fully licensed in July if they successfully pass their PEBC examinations. Residents who are unsuccessful on their first attempt at licensure need to register as a “Provisional Pharmacist” with the College of Pharmacists of BC.

Once the resident meets the College requirements for full licensure they can transfer from the “Provisional Pharmacist” category to the fully licensed category. Please note that additional preceptor oversight is required for residents who are not fully licensed. Residents who are unlicensed must notify preceptors of their licensure status at the beginning of each rotation.

Prior to being granted a provinsional license residents are only allowed to work to the scope of a Pharmacy Assistant until the provisional license is granted.

BC Pharmacy Residency Programs require residents to become fully licensed by the end of December. Residents who fail to become licensed by the end of December will be removed from the residency program.

Please see our program’s policy below regarding resident licensure and preceptor oversight.
