rotation description
This rotation involves two distinct services – the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (AMS) as well
as Infectious Diseases (ID) consult service. This rotation is based in Victoria at the Royal Jubilee
Hospital (RJH), in Duncan at the Cowichan District Hospital, in Nanaimo at the Nanaimo Regional
General Hospital, and in Campbell River at the Campbell River Hospital. Each day, the resident will
take on the care of 1-5 patients (depending on the complexity of the patient and where the ID/AMS
rotation falls within the year) from the AMS daily review list or the ID consult lists.
This rotation will provide the resident with the opportunity to learn about the management of common types of infections and the appropriate use of antimicrobials in a variety of practice settings (e.g. medicine, surgery, critical care) The resident will provide clinical patient care to select patients who have drug therapy problems related to the optimization of antimicrobial therapy. The resident will work to identify and resolve the patient’s DTPs, make suggestions to the team, monitor antimicrobial therapy and provide education regarding the optimal use of antimicrobials. Residents will collaborate with other healthcare professionals (e.g. ID, medical microbiologists, nurses, as appropriate) to evaluate microbiology results, optimize antimicrobial therapy, and monitor the efficacy and safety of their recommendations.
The resident will spend time learning about the different modalities of providing AMS services (prospective audit and feedback, education etc.), and about core AMS Program activities (e.g. quality improvement, updating policy & procedures, research, etc).
